Recently, I've had the privilege to travel to beautiful destinations. Surprisingly, I've been asked if I have a trust fund or if I come from a wealthy family. As nice as those two options would be, neither is the case. I'm just like any other college student, however, from a young age my parents taught me how to manage my money. Anyone is capable of saving money as long as they have a goal with milestones set in place.
I love everything about traveling and it's what makes me the happiest. Which is why my goal was to travel somewhere new every month for at least half a year. So, I knew that the perfect time to travel was after I graduated from university. In order to accomplish my goal I began saving since my sophomore year of college.
How do I afford traveling?
4. Ask yourself if you really need it! If you don’t have some type of system it can be easy to just spend money on different things and before you know it all the money from your check is gone. In high school I would go shopping almost every week and ended up buying things that I didn’t need but purchased because I thought it was cute. In my case I spent a lot on clothes.
I've gotten better at only purchasing items that I truly love. If I'm not sure how I feel about something then I leave it. If I’ve forgotten about the item then I didn’t actually care about it but if I continue to think about it then i'll go back and purchase it. Taking the time to step away and think about a purchase has allowed me to reduce the amount of unnecessary purchases.
5. Set aside the money you've saved! After having saved some money it's easy to have it and potentially take away from it. So, make sure the money you are saving is placed into a secure location such as a savings account that you will not be able to withdraw from until you are ready to use it.
Traveling on a budget
4. Travel with a group of friends! Having more people on a trip will allow you to split the expenses. A $60 taxi ride could become $15 with a group of 4 instead of $30 with just 2 people.
Set your Goals Today
My goal of being able to travel someplace new every month became successful due to the effort I put into it. I knew what my end goal was and I set mini goals along the way to keep me on track. If you truly want something then you have to be willing to stick to it. You may have to sacrifice other things along the way but in the end it will be worth it. I hope these tips were helpful!
What are your goals when it comes to saving? Take a moment to get a piece of paper and write them down today. Set a goal for each month up until the date of your ultimate goal. Start planning today and remember that it takes time. I started saving since my second year of college and now that I've graduated I'm able to live out my dreams. Let me know, in the comments, what your goals are and how you plan on reaching them!
